If you follow me on Instagram, you may be aware that I have a bit of a thing for novelty bags. And by a bit, I mean a lot - basically every single handbag that I own is ridiculous, kitsch, colourful and quite often shaped like a inanimate object. It's chill. Novelty bags are my favourite way to add a fun touch to any outfit - however dressed down you may be, a fun bag will always elevate your look and put a smile on people's faces. As I have received many compliments on my various bags both online and IRL, I thought I would finally photograph them all and make a post sharing my pretty extensive collection with you guys...
First things first are my most "practical" bags - my backpacks. As a fashion student and general hoarder of things, I tend to carry a lot around with me at a time so backpacks are perfect for that. My most used is definitely my glittery unicorn number from Skinnydip London - you'll hear that name pop up a lot in this post as they are just my everything accessory-wise. It's great because it's big enough to everything I need in for a long day of college, while still looking Cute AF. The other three bags are pretty new to my collection, actually - the heart bag is from Forever 21 and reminds me a lot of the ITA bags that are huge in Japanese street fashion (I need to think of a cute way to customise it in keeping with that trend); the Marie backpack is actually a kid's one from Disneyland Paris that I could not turn down; and the rainbow Alpacasso I got just last weekend from MCM Comic Con in London. Because nothing says mature, sophisticated 21 year old like a giant fluffy alpaca on your backpack, right?
Next up are my Skinnydip London crossbody bags (I told you I loved them). There were once 4 of these in my collection but unfortunately the zip on one of them broke recently so I had to lay it to rest, sob. However these three beauties are some of my best loved pieces and are amazing conversation starters, If I had to pick an absolute favourite though? Definitely the Krusty Shake bag from The Simpsons collaboration. It was my very first Skinnydip purchase and it never fails to make me smile - I mean, how could you not love a pink glittery bag shaped like a cup with Krusty The Clown's face on it? Answer: it's just not possible.
It's no secret that I have a bit of a penchant for all things iridescent and shiny, and this definitely spreads to my bag collection too. I have two holographic handbags at the moment that are vastly different but equally gorgeous. I picked up the shell crossbody from Primark last year and I use it all the time - it's perfect for using when you're running errands and want to add a bit of mermaid realness to your outfit. It was really affordable too; Primark constantly kill it with their accessories so keep a look out in your local store if you want a super sassy bag that won't break the bank. The unicorn clutch is from Somewhere Nowhere and was actually the first novelty bag I ever bought, way back in 2013, It's not the most practical thing that I own as it's totally flat - plus I rarely attend occasions that require a clutch bag - but it's still a gorgeous and special piece to have in my collection nonetheless.
Last but not least is by far one of my most treasured bags - as it was actually gifted to me by the wonderful brand Na-Ra Hayley. I remember being so chuffed that they wanted to send me something and I absolutely fell in love with this bag when I saw it on the website. It's pastel pink with gold hardware and resembles an old style telephone - I love the vintage, romantic aesthetic of it and it works great with more elegant outfits. It can also be worn either across-the-body or as a clutch - result!
There are a lot of other great brands out there selling amazing fun bags - designer-wise Charlotte Olympia and Olympia Le-Tan do some of the most whimsical I've ever seen; I'm hugely into the latter's Alice In Wonderland book clutch. If you're looking a little more budget friendly, Accessorize has been killing the game for years while ASOS frequently brings out some really unique pieces. Also, side note; at the time of posting, Lazy Oaf's incredible teddy bear backpack is in the sale - if you're anything like me, you'll want to snap that up ASAP.
Which of the bags in my collection are your favourite? Do you like novelty bags? I'd love to hear from you! <3
